Too Much Time At Church

Sir Michael Faraday was one of the world’s greatest scientists.  He was also a deeply religious man.  One night, a group of distinguished men came to hear him speak.  By his words and demonstrations, he held them spellbound as he spoke of the magnet.

When he finished his lecture, the house rocked with enthusiastic applause.  The Prince of Wales, who was present, proposed a motion of congratulations and thanks to Faraday.  The motion carried amid renewed applause.  The crowd waited for Faraday’s response.  They looked around, but he was gone.  It was meeting time at church and he had slipped away during the applause.  He had gone out to enhance his relationship with God and to renew fellowship with friends.

It’s hard to imagine, but there are many church members who have never attended a Wednesday night service.  The justification often given is, “Well, we spend too much time at church anyway.  I attend most Sunday mornings and have even been there a few Sunday evening meetings.  That’s all the religion I need.”

Let me share some information that you might find startling.  It comes from an article, “Time, Talent, and Money,” published by the late O.D. Giles.  He brings out, from Leviticus 23 and 25, and also Numbers 23, specific information on the amount of time the ancient Hebrew nation spent in worship to Jehovah.  Over a 50-year period, they would devote 6,550 days to God.  That is an average of 131 days per year.  Remember, those are Days, not Hours.  Thus 3,144 hours per year would have been to His glory.  If we today attend three hours each Sunday and an hour each Wednesday, that amounts to only 208 hours each year.  And we live under a “better covenant with better promises” (Hebrews 8:36).

Wednesday night attendance is a suggestion to God and man as to how much our religion means to us.  It’s not that we have more religion than we NEED.  We probably just have more of the world than we need.

Work Day

On Saturday, January 8th and Saturday, January 15th we plan to have workdays to repair and replace the roof on the building we purchased earlier this year.  If you have not signed up to help please see Bob Parnett as soon as possible.  We need as many to help as possible.  We must get the repairs done soon to further prevent any more damage.

Security Issues

When you unlock any door at the church building, please make sure that the door is locked back when you leave.  Please make sure that the security system is also armed.  We have been having several incidents where the building has been left unlocked and/or unalarmed. This makes for a dangerous situation.  If you set off the alarm system, go to the phone in the Teacher’s Resource Room (Old Building) or Sound Room (New Building) to take the call from Central Security to let them know everything is okay. Also, please call Bryan or Teresa.  They are the first ones that receive a phone call from the security company.    If you call Bryan or Teresa so that they will know it is not an emergency, they may be able to stop the police from being sent.  If you do not call, Bryan, Teresa, or someone else must also respond.  If you have any questions about the security system please ask and someone can help you.

Forms Needed

If you have not filled out and turned in an Involvement Questionnaire, please do this as soon as possible.  This will help with areas that need assistance.  If you have any questions about the form please see Bryan or Teresa.  The forms are located on a table in the foyer.  There is a basket in which to place the completed forms.

HEAR

But He said, "More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!" (Luke 11: 28).

How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10: 14).

BELIEVE

"He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned (Mark 16: 16).

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name (John 20: 30).

REPENT

Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit”
(Acts 2: 38).

"…but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance (Acts 26: 20).

CONFESS

"Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 10: 32).

But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Romans 10: 8 - 9).

BE BAPTIZED

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen (Matthew 28: 18 - 20).

"And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord" (Acts 22: 16).
