DON'T FRET IF SOMEONE DISLIKES YOU

Someone once said to me, "I don't know of anybody who dislikes you."  I took it with a grain of salt because attitudes toward a preacher can and do change over time.  That's just part of being a leader.  But all Christians should face the fact that not everyone will like us and we must be mature enough to put this in perspective.  Note these facts:

Jesus taught us that we are not in a popularity contest.  He said, "Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you!  For so did their fathers to the false prophets" (Luke 6:26).  We usually have to decide whether we want to be popular or right.  We are proud of our young people who choose the latter.  The Lord explained that the way to eternal life is difficult and narrow, and few find it (Matthew 7:14).

Some people are just "that way."  King Saul was snubbed from the start of his reign by a small group of rebels who refused to bring him presents (1 Samuel 10:26-27).  Yet, Saul overlooked this display of bad manners and went about his business of conquering Israel's enemies.  Note that there will be some people who don't like you though you did nothing to them.  Overlook this and go about your business.

It may be a sign of your godliness.  Jesus said, "For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved" (John 3:20).  The Apostle Paul testified, "Yea, and all that will be godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution" (2 Timothy 3:12).  There are people out there who don't like Christianity and they don't like Christians bothering their conscience.

Will Rogers said, "I never met a man I didn't like."  Too bad the world is not full of men like him!  We can't please all of the people all of the time, so let us choose to please Him who holds our eternal reward.
