BE CAREFUL
“Oh, be careful little eyes what you
see…”
“Oh, be careful little ears what you hear…”
“Oh, be careful little hands what
you do…”
“Oh, be careful little feet where
you go…”
“Oh, be careful little mouth what
you say…”
So goes the children’s song that has been sung so
many times over the years.
We have “grown-up” to songs of greater wisdom,
deeper thought, and more meaning and yet, it’s the simple
songs of childhood that remind us of some very important
truths.
Jesus said, "If your right eye causes you to sin,
pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable
for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole
body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you
to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more
profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for
your whole body to be cast into hell” (Matthew 5: 29). Now that seems awfully extreme to me and to you, but
let’s not miss the point. Nothing on earth is more important than taking care of
our eternal destiny.
Let’s look at Jesus’ teaching from a slightly
different perspective. If
I want to keep both of my eyes, both of my ears, both of my
hands, and both of my feet, then I will be very careful with
them. This is
true in the physical sense. When we work with power tools, or around any kind of
machinery (even kitchen appliances) we have to be careful or
we might have an accident that will cost us a body part, or
even worse, our life. This
is also true in the spiritual sense. We need to be careful what we see, what we hear, what
we do, where we go, and what we say because it could cost us
now. But even worse, it could cost us for all eternity.
God has given us all of these. What we do with them either brings Him glory or it
bring Him grief. The
choice is ours. We
choose to do good or do evil. We choose to be careful or to be careless. Funny, if we are care less now, we will really care
about it at the judgment, but if we are care full now, we
won’t have to care about anything at the judgment. Kind of
like the old Fram Oil filter commercial. “You can pay me
now, or pay me later.”
